This monthly (maybe more) newsletter will give you communications expert insights, news & analysis, and education: examining business through a comms lens.
What is the “comms lens,” exactly?
Well, communications is a lot of things, but I like to think of it as combining people and stories. I know that sounds fluffy AF, but I promise it’s not.

Businesses need humans to operate. People do the work and make the decisions, people need to prompt/QC/review AI generated work, people buy products and services. The human element is everywhere and it’s the most important and complex element we have to deal with.
Everything we know about human history, behavior, and psychology points to stories as the most effective way to flow information to people. Stories educate, inform, persuade, inspire, change and improve and they can take an infinite number of different forms.
It is only practical to think about communications as combining these two things.
In each addition of this newsletter, I’ll use my 20+ years of experience in communications and marketing to analyze a function, strategy, or tactic through a comms lens. I’ll show how communications can improve or amplify efforts, decrease risk, and get more out of investments.
This newsletter will always consist of three recurring sections:
- XYZ through a Comms Lens: Review of a specific business function, tactic, channel, situation, etc. from a comms lens with advice and guidance on how to utilize comms to support those situations.
- And currently …: This will be an analysis of a current communications practice, news, event, etc. Might also include some book recs because I am nothing if not a reader.
- Mastery of Language: Language is a complicated thing. Our understanding of words is shaped by experience, education, culture, and so many other variables. (If you think about this enough, you’ll realize it’s actually a miracle any of us understand each other at all.) This short corner of the newsletter might include a vocab word or short tip to help you on the path towards mastery of language: a requirement for excellent communications.
I may occasionally also note some specific services or workshops from my business, Way and Words but since I easily get the sales ick, these won’t be obnoxious.
A Note on AI use: Being a snob about my writing, I will not be using AI to draft any part of this newsletter. While I use it as an occasional research assistant, note taker, data analyst, and thought partner – all my words are fresh from my brain. Organic, if you will.
Enjoy!
